To train psychologists from a perspective of integral health, privileging the development of competences and autonomous learning, which will allow the graduate to intervene in an interdisciplinary manner, with support in scientific research and extension, in the understanding of the human being in its various dimensions and in the search for individual and social transformation actions at the local, regional, national and international levels.

The Psychology Program of the University of Magdalena, in the year 2025 will be recognized for its high quality to train professionals to contribute to comprehensive health and social transformation, becoming a local, regional, national and international reference, which contributes to the quality of life and the well-being of society in general.

The creation of the Psychology Program responds to the fulfillment of the social function that the University of Magdalena must develop with the community of the Colombian Caribbean Region. This program is part of the macro project Refund the University, a collective project, which seeks to strengthen it institutionally and socially to contribute to the departmental and regional development.

The construction of the Psychology Program started as a research process, whose central aim was to develop a curricular proposal that consults the reflections and discussions about the development of Psychology as a science and as a profession. On the other hand, the program collects current trends, criteria, and approaches regarding the training required by the psychologist to perform competently in the society with a historical perspective and a vision of the future.

To achieve these purposes, the program designed a methodological process that included the following moments:

The creation of a work team and a work plan.

The conceptualization on Psychology as a science and a profession through the reflection and discussion around the following questions:

• What is the object of Psychology study as a science?
• What have been the most recent developments in psychological science?
• What are the functions, tasks or roles a psychologist must assume at present?
• What are the most common difficulties or problems a psychologist must face nowadays?
• What are the trends in psychologist training?

The critical analysis of these questions served as a basis to characterize the profile of the professional to train, taking into account the Institutional Educational Project of the University of Magdalena, contemporary trends in the training of psychologists and the needs of the local, regional and national context.

Likewise, the institution reviewed and analyzed the curriculums of the Universities that offer Psychology Programs at regional, national and international level, in aspects related to the mission, vision, objectives, profile, training axes, curricular structure, research and professional practices, areas of emphasis, laboratories, among others.

The results from this analysis and interpretation constituted the basic inputs for the presentation of the general outline of the curricular proposal of the Program.

At this point, it is important to highlight the participation of the Deans and Teachers of the following universities: Catholic, INCCA, Javeriana, Los Andes, Konrad Lorenz in Bogotá, as well as the Bolivariana and Autonomous of Bucaramanga, the Universidad del Norte and the Metropolitana in Barranquilla and, finally, the Cooperative and UNAD in Santa Marta. Additionally, the institution presented the proposal to a group of psychologists from Santa Marta to enrich and validate the program generating interest in the curricular construction project and made significant contributions to its consolidation.

Afterward, the faculty supported the program before the Academic Board of the University of Magdalena for its approval and legalization, likewise, the Superior Board, through Agreement 017 of October 29, 1999, approved the Development Project of the Psychology Program. In September 2000, the curricular proposal of the Program was sent to ICFES, being incorporated into the National Information System of Higher Education on May 17, 2001, with the code 121341500004700111100. Finally, the Program begins its academic work in the first semester of 2002.

Since 2017, the program has made progress in the consolidation of the following proposals and projects: the approval of the Master's Degree in Clinical, Legal and Forensic Psychology, the Special Cohort of the Doctorate in Psychology of the Universidad del Valle, the strengthening of strategic alliances with Secretary of Education and departmental and district health. On the other hand, the program has been working in the expansion in the diplomas for graduates, the creation of the Psychological Care Program and the qualification of the same, projection of the PAP on the sixth floor of the Fernando Troconis University Hospital, and in the elaboration of the process of Self-evaluation.
